French and Francophone (B.A.)

Explore the World Through French & Francophone Studies at UNF

Earn a Bachelor of Arts in French and Francophone Studies by completing 30 credit hours of upper-level courses. At UNF, you will study the French language and the histories, literatures and cultures of France and the wider Francophone world. Courses, offered in French and English, cover art, philosophy, politics, business and more, giving you a well-rounded global perspective. Whether your interests are in literature, diplomacy, travel or international careers, this program equips you with the skills and cultural insight to make your mark around the world.

Job Outlook

French and Francophone students who seek employment after graduating are successful in 4 distinct areas of employment
  1. International Business and Trade: Careers in import/export coordination, global marketing and business development with companies operating in French-speaking regions.
  2. Translation and Interpretation: Positions providing language services for government agencies, businesses, nonprofits and media organizations.
  3. Education and Cultural Exchange: Opportunities in teaching, study abroad program coordination, and cultural liaison roles at schools, universities and cultural centers.
  4. Government and Diplomacy: Careers in foreign service, intelligence, immigration services and international policy with agencies such as the U.S. Department of State or international NGOs.
  • Core Requirements (9 credits)

    Grades of C or above are required in all major courses.

    Note: Students should select their first FRE or FRW course according to placement test results and departmental recommendation. Please contact the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures about course placement and retroactive credit.

    Complete ALL of the following Courses:

    • FRE2240 - (FC) Intermediate French I
    • FRE2241 - (FC) Intermediate French II

    FOT3000: Career Pathways in Language and Culture Study (3 Credits)*

    *Course pending state approval

    Students who place out of FRE2240 Intermediate French I and FRE2241 Intermediate French II may waive FRE2240 and/or FRE2241; substitute any FRE, FRW, or French-language FOL electives at the 3000 level or above; or apply for retroactive credit.

  • Minor Requirement

    A minor is required for this major.* (Credits will vary)

    The minor must be selected from the list of approved minors, including those outside the college of the major.

    The consists of Intermediate French I, Intermediate French II, and three upper-level courses.

    See  in the Undergraduate Catalog. Minors are generally completed during the last 60 credit hours of your program. Your minor may require prerequisites, so choosing a minor early is beneficial. See your Advisor to declare a minor.

    *Double majors are exempt from a minor.

  • Foreign Language / Foreign Cultures Requirements

    All courses with the FRE, FRW, and FOL prefixes count toward the Foreign Language / Foreign Cultures requirements. This B.A. graduation requirement is built into the French and Francophone Studies major coursework, so French and Francophone Majors will not require additional courses to exceed this requirement.

  • Tuition
