Program Description
The Bachelor of Arts in Mathematics Education (Grades 6–12) is a state-approved, CAEP-accredited program that prepares graduates for teacher certification in Florida to teach mathematics at the secondary level. Designed for students who are passionate about math and committed to teaching, the program equips future educators with the knowledge and skills to foster mathematical thinking, support all learners and promote confidence in math classrooms.
Grounded in research-based practices and aligned with national and state standards, the curriculum emphasizes conceptual understanding, problem-solving, mathematical reasoning and equitable teaching practices. Students engage with topics such as algebra, geometry, statistics, calculus and number theory while learning how to plan instruction, assess student learning and create inclusive environments that reflect the needs of today’s middle and high school students.
The program includes structured field experiences and a full-semester internship in a secondary school classroom, where students collaborate with experienced mentor teachers and university faculty. These placements allow students to apply theory in practice, strengthen their classroom management strategies and refine their instructional techniques in real-world settings. Passing the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) is required prior to the final internship.
Graduates of the program are well-prepared to begin their careers as certified math teachers in grades 6–12 or to pursue advanced study in education or mathematics-related fields. With a strong foundation in content knowledge and a commitment to student success, they are ready to lead engaging, empowering learning experiences that help students see the value and beauty of mathematics in their everyday lives.
