Program Description
The Bachelor of Arts in English Education with a concentration in English (Grades 6–12) is a state-approved, CAEP-accredited program that prepares graduates for teacher certification in Florida to teach English Language Arts at the secondary level. Designed for students passionate about literature, language and teaching, the program equips future educators with the tools requried to inspire expression, foster critical thinking and support the academic and personal growth of adolescents in various classroom settings.
Grounded in evidence-based practices and aligned with state and national standards, the curriculum emphasizes adolescent literacy, writing instruction and culturally responsive pedagogy. Students explore key areas such as literary analysis, grammar and linguistics, communication theory and curriculum planning, developing tools to help learners engage with texts and express themselves across multiple modes.
The program includes structured field experiences and a full-semester internship in a middle or high school classroom, where students work alongside experienced mentor teachers and university faculty. These hands-on placements allow students to translate theory into practice, gain classroom management skills and refine their instructional techniques in real-world settings. Successful completion of the Florida Teacher Certification Examinations (FTCE) is required prior to the final internship.
Graduates of the program are well-prepared to begin careers as certified English teachers in grades 6–12 or pursue graduate study in education, English or related fields. With strong content knowledge and a commitment to student voice and literacy, they are ready to lead meaningful learning experiences that empower the next generation of thinkers, readers and writers.
